October 2024
This month we’re featuring 3 bottles that embrace the first true month of Autumn
September may be the month that Earth, Wind, & Fire always remembers, but October is truly the first month of Fall, and in our humble opinion, it’s the best month - still no glimpses of winter, breezes with the right amount of chill to the air, and the changing of the leaves, plus Halloween!
So in the spirit of this month, we’ve assembled three beautiful wines to cozy up to by the fire while enjoying a nice warm meal in our favorite flannels.
Limited Addition
Mencia 2020
Eola Springs Vineyard
Eola-Amity Hills
Oregon
Farming: Dry-Farmed, Organic
A rare find from one of Oregon’s most singular sites, the Eola Springs Vineyard in Rickreall, Oregon, where Brooks Winery and Lingua Franca source some of their wines. This is the only Mencia planting in all of the Willamette Valley, but it has found a perfect home here nestled in a 2 acre plot amongst the vineyard’s highest, rockiest, and most volcanic soils.
Mencia is a grape that is primarily found in Bierzo and Ribera Sacra in Spain, where the varietal originated and is best known for its ability to produce elegant medium bodied wines that feature a fine floral and peppery note on the nose, with tannins that work well alongside heartier fare.
Have this alongside some mushroom risotto, tagine, or even steak au poivre
Ovum Wines
“Love O’ Love”
Gewurztraminer
Gerber Vineyard
Rogue Valley AVA
Oregon
F arming: Dry-Farmed, Sustainable
Vines Planted: 1976
Ovum Wines has been a favorite of ours for a long time, Established in 2011 by Ksenija and John House, Ovum was founded in hopes of producing Oregon wines that are honest reflections of time and place. They’re most well known for their BIG SALT co-ferments hat are made for summer days at the beach, but they excel at producing wines made from Alsatian varietals (Riesling, Pinot Blanc, and Gewurztraminer) across the board.
Gewurztraminer is a varetal that is often misunderstood, but beloved by those who’ve made the effort to understand this complex varietal, so it’s no wonder that Ksenija and John have chosen to pay homage to another complex legend that didn’t want to be misunderstood, Nina Simone. Each vintage of this single-vineyard Gewurztraminer is given the name of a Nina Simone song, in this case “Love O’ Love” from Simone’s 1967 Silk & Soul album.
Pax Wine
2020 Sonoma Coast
Syrah
Nellessen/Majik/Armagh/Griffins Lair/Morris Vineyards
Sonoma Coast AVA
California
Farming: Sustainable / Organic
Fermenting: 10 months in neutral French Oak Puncheons & Concrete
Alcohol: 12.5 %
Pax Mahle initially came to California as a curator of fine wine for Dean & Deluca, but fell in love with the land and the potential of a famed French varietal in the California hillsides, Syrah.
Like its brethren amongst the hilly slopes of the Northern Rhone, cool climate Syrah is known for its distinct meaty and peppery characteristics, and Pax, alongside his wife Pamela, have delivered high-quality wines for more than two decades now. Enjoy this alongside a nice rich Cassoulet or any savory stew of your choice.
