Island Creek Oysters Caviar and Pink Fizz, it's Rosé Day!

Rosé season is here!  This is our favorite time of the year since it’s the only time of the year (apparently) that we won’t get mocked for drinking pink!  Truth be told, Rosé season is a myth and it’s an excellent choice all year round for any occasion, though it’s still undeniably the best beach wine on earth, and while it’s popularity grows each year it’s still the most misunderstood style of wine out there.

So what is Rosé?  The answer is in the skins.  All wine grapes, when crushed, run clear and the only thing that give it color is it’s extended contact with the skins.  Contact with the skins is what makes a red wine red while also steeping in complex flavors, aromas, and tannins. For a Rosé the maceration is so short that no tannin is brought into the wine and only minimal color is extracted resulting in Rosé’s iconic pink hues.

The world of Rosé is broader and more profound than people seem to know.  It comes in many shapes and sizes, hues and intensity, flavors and aromas.  The styles of Rosé are numerous and worth exploring. Classic examples from Provence are famous for their light salmon color and brisk, ethereal style.  They’re perfect for a trip to the beach or a hot summer day since they’re so crisp and fun to drink. Other wines, like the Rosé of Bandol, is much heartier and more powerful.  The wines will be darker, since they’re made of mostly Mourvedre, and more intense and textural. This is the kind of Rosé you serve that a red wine drinker that says they ‘don’t like Rosé’.  Some Rosé, like Rosé of Zinfandel, can be smokey and savory with tobacco like aromas and leathery flavors, excellent for a cookout or BBQ. Others like Pet Nat Rosé are fizzy and light with lower ABV so you can enjoy it all day long.  I could go on forever about this!
